[NOVA Math] Seminar of Operations Research

27-05-2025

The Center of Mathematics and Applications (NOVA Math), promote the Seminar of Operations Research with the title: “A Geometric Framework Beyond Euclidean Space for Molecular Optimization”.  Carlile Campos Lavor (Applied Math. Dep., University of Campinas - UNICAMP) is the speaker.

Abstract: Molecular geometry optimization plays a central role in computational chemistry, relying heavily on the efficient computation of interatomic distances and their derivatives. This talk presents a novel geometric framework based on a non-Euclidean model of the 3D space, designed to improve the performance of energy minimization algorithms by simplifying distance and derivative calculations.

Short Bio: Prof. Carlile Campos Lavor is a Full Professor at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Scientific Computing (IMECC - UNICAMP). He holds a BSc in Mathematics (UNICAMP, 1996), a PhD in Computer Science (COPPE-UFRJ, 2001) and a postdoc in Quantum Computing (LNCC, 2003), with research expertise in Protein Geometry, Distance Geometry, Geometric Algebra, and Quantum Computing. He has held leadership roles, including Head of Applied Mathematics (2012–2013) and Associate Director of IMECC (2015–2016). His collaborative 2014 SIAM Review paper earned a Notable Paper Award from ACM (2015). He served as President of the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC, 2018–2019), received the Elon Lages Lima Award (2021), and was elected to the councils of SBM and SBMAC in 2023. His work has been recognized internationally through invited talks at institutions like MIT, Princeton, and IBM.
